How Preservatives are Harmful

How preservatives are harmful and why you should avoid

Why packet food has preservatives

Packaged food has a high consumption due to the fact that it is instant. Open a packet of chips, microwave a frozen meal, these are preferred by people because it is easy and quick to make. However, these foods contain a harmful substance called preservatives. Preservatives are a type of food additive that is put into packaged food to prolong its shelf life, enhance the taste or keep the colour and nutrients of the product intact. Most of these additives do not have an instant harm to the human body, however, they have a long-term impact on your health. It is important to ponder that if these preservatives last years on shelf, can it not last in our bodies for a very long time? In this world of high speed, everyone looks for instant food for themselves and their families. However, it is important for all of us to be aware of what we are feeding to our own body as well as our close ones.

How they are harmful to babies and adults

Preservatives are harmful to babies and adults as they promote growth of cancer cells and cause chronic disorders of the heart and brain. Additives such as High Fructose Corn Syrup (HCFs) are a cheap alternative to regular sugar in packaged foods since a long time. HFCs can increase LDL levels in your body which increase bad cholesterol. It also increases obesity levels and chances of diabetes. There is another kind of preservative called as “Aspartame”. This kind of preservative is a sweetener and has several side effects such as severe headaches, vertigo, nausea, memory loss, ringing in ears, slurred speech, loss or change of taste. Monosodium Glutamate also famously known as MSG is a type of salt of a non-essential amino acid. It is commonly used as a flavour enhancer and food additive. An excitotoxin, MSG works by triggering the brain to produce excess quantities of the feel-good drug dopamine. Excessive ingestion of MSG can damage cells and result in overeating, which leads to obesity. “Potassium bromate” is a preservative added to bread as a flour enhancer – to make it rise better and give it a uniform consistency. On cooking and heating, it breaks down into bromide, which, when consumed in excess, can inhibit the metabolism of the iodine and is regarded as a possible carcinogenic in countries like Canada, Brazil, Peru, and South Korea. Another very harmful preservative is “Diacetyl”. Diacetyl imparts a buttery taste to food. It is a chemical that is naturally present at low concentrations in a wide variety of foods such as dairy, beer, honey and fruits. However, artificially made diacetyl is added to impart the buttery flavour and aroma as well as to delay rancidity in packaged popcorn. The buttery steam of heated diacetyl can directly reach the lungs and excessive amounts can cause lung disease. Often used as a preservative in many foods – including soft drinks, juices, cereals and meats – sodium benzoate is known to kill bacteria in acidic conditions. Several studies have linked sodium benzoate to headaches, stomach upsets, asthma attacks and hyperactivity in children. Combined with ascorbic acid (vitamin C), this salt can form benzene, which has been linked to increased risk of leukaemia and other blood cancers. Several doctors prohibit specially babies from consumption of colourful food and drinks due to the fact that it contains colour additives. Food dyes are one of the most widely used and dangerous additives. Most of them are petroleum-derived and may contribute to behavioural problems in children like attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Some have even been implicated as possible carcinogenic. The use of certain colours in food is permitted but the concentration of these colours has been limited to 100 parts per million. It has also been made mandatory for manufacturers to specify the use of colours on their packages. These are just a few examples of preservatives, packaged foods contain several preservatives that haven’t even been tested yet to know the harm.
