8 Reasons Why Biscuits Are Not Good For Babies
It’s been a long time, equivalent to an era, where we’ve been consuming this easily available anywhere food. But we all know the saying that there is something wrong with things that come to easy. Well, that’s how it is here as well.
Remember those old gold days where you used to have biscuits made from the local bakery or those irregularly shaped homemade biscuits? There was so much purity in them. The purity of a mother’s love and care and the perfection thereby created is no more to be seen so commonly nowadays. Yes, it is a growing nation and we all are becoming professionals slowly so we have turned out to the easy options of commercially manufactured biscuits.
So much so, the first thing a child is made to eat after six months of breastfeeding is a biscuit dunk in their favorite flavored milk and the trend continues for their entire childhood. They have a nice shape, a nice taste and after so many licenses how can they be bad for a growing child, right? There is a hole in the wall here.
First of all how the biscuits are made – the principal ingredients of biscuit dough are refined flour, sugar, fat, and water. They are mixed with other minor ingredients (such as baking powder, skimmed milk, emulsifier, and sodium metabisulphite) to form dough containing a well – developed gluten network. I mean what could go wrong about this right? Let us dwell on this one by one. First the main stuff:
1. Flour
Well this story ended with this ingredient, in India popularly called “maida”. A notorious ingredient for which our digestive system as humans is not suited. It sticks, it constipates and provides the wrong type of calories which turn out as a bad body in the future. It’s all refined wheat which has absolutely no nutritive value has a negative impact altogether.
2. Sugar
If you’ve come across the trendy quotes of white poison well then this tops the list. Excess calories and draining pancreas going on secreting absurd amounts of insulin to rebel against the excessively high sugar spikes thereby preparing the kid for a nice diabetic post 40 tags. A few decaying teeth and an increased preponderance to demeaning diseases like obesity can’t be excluded too.
3. Fat
Who knows what kinds of this substance they use and whose there to regulate the quality standards. So many products were being used in the markets which were licensed but no one came to know their harms until recently. I believe as mothers one should know about it too. The fat used here is mostly trans fat. The worst type of fats available made by improper hydrogenation. They also have a negating effect on your child’s memory and brain development. Why mom?
Coming down to the minor additives lets shed light on the unusual stuff.
4. Sodium Metabisulphite
I don’t know if you’ll believe this or not but it’s true that this chemical, yep you read that correctly, this chemical is used as a bleaching agent in the textile industries and has the property of becoming a highly corrosive acid when mixed with water and the human body has ample amounts of it won’t hesitate to form an amazing acidic union with it. Another downside of it is that it reduces the perfusion of the heart meaning less blood flow to the heart and a weaker heart. Who wants their kiddo to be weak at heart eh?
5. Emulsifiers
This helps to reduce the effects of gluten to the extent that they can be mentioned here. But then what is wrong with this? Well, they have two main disadvantages. One, they are harmful to the intestines, cause harm to the intestinal barrier of good bacteria and predispose the child to chronic intestinal disease. Two, they affect the skin. Some emulsifiers have the property of causing increased water loss from the skin thereby causing dry skin. They irritate the skin because of the fact that they decrease the lipid producing effect of the glands which keeps the cheeks of the apple of your eye soft.
6. Food Coloring and Food Flavoring
The industries have always taken the help of them to make their foods look attractive and suit the type of biscuits made almost all of the biscuits made today are containing these substances which are not good for the child’s growth. They cause hormonal irregularities in the body and impair the development of the body.
7. Allergens
Even though they might seem irrelevant in terms of quantities but even that amount is enough to cause severe disability in the child. Gluten and soy lecithin are really the ones to look out for. Why so much pain?
8. No Roughage
We all can’t start our day without emptying ourselves and the biscuits help us do the exact opposite. With no roughage comes constipation. Biscuits have absolutely no roughage. It’s in the religious texts that green vegetables are important for us. Well, no physician today would say that it’s wrong. They provide us with loads of roughage which keeps the bowel flora healthy and moving.
Well, we’ve evolved so much and its taken us millions of years to come to the most intelligent version of us humans. Why risk so much for something so menial? Yes, biscuits are bad for a kid’s health but it doesn’t affect the kid as long as its a delicacy and not a routine. Our kids are reasons for our happiness and no matter how we are and what we have to face, we want the best for them.
The best way to survive this apocalyptic trend is to shift to homemade biscuits. To all working moms out there ‘there are good homemade biscuits online, check em out’. Another amazing move by all smart moms is feeding their child organic biscuits which have no added preservatives and are made from whole wheat which has dietary fiber thus providing nutrition and a little bit of roughage.
Feed your child the right thing. They’ve been served the purest form of love and affection from you and don’t deserve anything less than that in food as well.
